ADVANCED JOINT ENGLISH TELECOMMUNICATION

Brief Introduction about AJET

The simple philosophy of AJET (Advanced Joint English Telecommunication) appears to be to elevate the teaching of English in K-12 schools to a higher dimension.  AJET attempts to "bring to life" the practical use of English as a communication medium.

As far as education is concerned, students will develop their:

**hardware--information management skills
**software--communicative skills in English

**liveware--critical thinking skills and
awareness of love & concern for life

The Establishment of AJET

AJET is directed by Dr. Chen Nian -shing of National Sun Yat-sen Univ. It is sponsored by MOECC as well as Board of Education of Kaohsiung.

     AJET--officially sponsored by MOEE--
has developed from one teacher challenging four students to use some creative learning into a cooperative cohort of teachers and students across a number of schools. It has involved teachers and students in international exchanges to conferences and seminars all over the world.

AJET Students

Students are introduced to the Internet and encouraged to develop an international perspective by communicating with students in other countries. They use the tools of email, BBS, chat, web pages (text, pictures, sound, video) and the medium of video conference. Students are used to using many new media to present themselves.

Students realize the value of English proficiency as a means of meeting other students on "common ground," while teachers applied IT tools to teaching the content lessons.

English Teachers' Professional Development Cyber Community

English teachers obtain good support of teaching platform and CALL training, They design the teaching courses cooperatively,  and create the activities and content. This is the ideal teaching team for AJDS, which is based on the research and development AJDS Study Circle On-line (ASCO).

On ASCO, teachers themselves do action research. They accumulate first-hand action research data to improve their own teaching under the natural teaching situation. Teachers primarily use qualitative analysis  to gather information systematically in a long term.
